Newsweek reported recently on a study by the University of Washington, concluding that socio-economic conditions can impact follow-up care for children who have suffered traumatic brain injuries. The study, published in the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, surveyed 300 health care providers (including physical therapy and mental health providers) around Washington state. It revealed the following trends:
- Only 46% of providers accepted children covered by Medicaid.
- Less than 20% of providers accepted Medicaid and were equipped to provide service for non-English speaking families
- Children covered by Medicaid had access to fewer rehabilitation services
